Even if our West Tennessee winter had not been so challenging, we would have welcomed the arrival of Spring with its warmer temperatures and milder winds. In late March our hardworking maintenance team of Roger Robinson and Marcus Stokes concentrated on removing numerous smaller fallen limbs which the strong winds continued to blow down. Three large older hollies were downed by some of these exceedingly strong winds. Our men cut these trees into smaller pieces, and we paid Tennessee Tree Works to take them away while they were taking down a dead oak and its big downed limb in Section E.
By April our maintenance team was beginning to focus on the work which continues to consume most of their time from now until the first frost, i.e. mowing, trimming, edging, and weed-eating. Several years ago we were told that as much as 70% of the Spring and Summer maintenance work is weed-eating since we have more than 10,000 burials, marked with monuments and headstones of varying shapes and sizes.
We no longer employ a cemetery manager in order to save the money we desperately need for repaving our roads as well as paying for daily cemetery maintenance. Dr. Brenda Alexander, Cemetery Association president, has been our “volunteer front person” for more than a year. She is in the cemetery numerous times each week and returns all calls made to the Cemetery Association office.
Please call us at 731-422-4316 if you have comments or questions. If you leave a message, your call will be returned ASAP. We also hope you will make the time to visit the cemetery to check on gravesites of family and friends or to take a quiet stroll through our historic grounds.
